We couldn't have planned this shoot any better. It was the nicest day we've had around here in a very long time. The weather was beautiful and so was the girl!

So we're setting up for our shot, "Stand over here. Move your hand a little..." and we hear this noise. It's a weird noise. Not just a squirrel. And it starts getting louder... And then I yell "RUN! GRAB OUR STUFF! HURRY!"

The sprinklers came on in the middle of our photo session! But the camera bag and pile of clothing changes were saved. These ladies were real troopers! Three generations of beauty, don't you agree?

Had a great time with this family on a nearby ranch. What a beautiful place for pictures! I've never had a photo shoot with horses before, but I really enjoyed it. I tried some different processing because the scenery and the horses just called for something different. So much fun!!

Beautiful Senior

I may be a little biased, but this senior is beautiful! She also happens to be my own daughter, Janna. What better way to get back to blogging than with my very own senior! I just love this girl <3

We went to a very small nearby town for a unique background. VERY small. Three people stopped to ask us if we were lost or needed help! And a small chihuahua followed us around the whole time. But we love how they turned out:

Found myself with an unexpectedly free Saturday and I decided to take a drive to Fredericksburg. Yes, I went all by myself so that I wouldn't drive anyone crazy wanting to stop and take pictures! I only pulled over and stopped about 5 times, but I bet there were 25 places that would have made beautiful pictures. The best flowers that I saw were around Mason - just before and just after. Can't wait to take another drive later and see them when they REALLY start blooming - it's supposed to be a great year for flowers!

Fun Engagement Session

Oh my! These guys were real troopers! I had them trudging through the mud, walking for miles, sitting in tall grass and ant beds, and even hopping pasture fences... They were VERY good sports :)

I love this one. I didn't tell him to look at her like that, he just was. So sweet!

I am so excited! I have been taking an online photography class this month, and I won the first contest!! For my prize, I chose a new logo design by Jeanine Linder Take a peek at her website and you'll see why I'm so excited.

She is not only very talented, but she is also as nice as can be. I am almost ready to come visit her in Switzerland :) I love her logos - they are so fresh and fun. So... keep watching this space - pretty soon Amy Fuchs Photography will have a fun new logo!

I subbed in third grade last week. It's been a while since my kids made Valentine bags. I got to be there for the party, too. I was very afraid of being in charge of sugared-up kids, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be :)

Kitchen Adventures

Bill and Jessie and I watched Julie & Julia a while back. Cute movie - especially if you like to cook, even just a little. If you have seen that movie, you know that Julie makes boeuf bourguignon (I have to look it up every time I type it because I can NOT remember how to spell it!). Well, as I'm watching the movie, I'm thinking how cool it would be to make it. So I looked up Julia Child's recipe for boeuf bourguignon (I am now just copying and pasting so I don't have to even TRY to spell it...) Mastering the Art of French Cooking and it was SOOO complicated. It had three different recipes within it - you had to make the mushrooms and carrots using their own separate recipes before you even started the beouf. Whew - much too difficult. I guess that is something I will never master!

Then I happened upon a much simpler recipe that came from a lady who used to live in France (the internet is a wonderful thing!). Hey, why use a complicated recipe when you can use an easy one, right? So I made it!

And yes, I noticed that in this photo, the wine is what I focused on... Well, any recipe that begins and ends with wine is a GOOD recipe in my book :)

I didn't get a picture of the beouf... But it WAS delicious! Bill said it was stew... No culture, that man, no culture :) He may be right, sort of, but it was REALLY good stew.

If you are interested, the recipe is below. But you really should watch Julie and Julia first! You'll love it :)

Boeuf Bourguignon
Ingredients:
For 4 people
- Chuck cut Beef (2 pounds; more if you have a large enough Dutch Oven-like dish to make it), cut into cubes (1-inch or 2.5cm)
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 1/2 pound of pearl onions, preferably white but red would do fine as well
- 1/2 pound of mushrooms, cut into quarters
- 3 slices of bacon, cut into small pieces
- a bottle of red wine (I used about 2/3 of mine)
- a bouquet garni (or bay leaves and fresh parsley)
- Fresh parsley (for decoration, more if you don't have a bouquet garni)
- Flour
- Dijon Mustard (optional)
- Olive Oil, salt, pepper
Roll the meat cubes into flour so as to slightly cover the meat

In a Dutch oven (or thick-bottom pot with lid), heat olive oil. Divide the meat in two or three batches, salt the meat and brown the meat cubes for 3-5 minutes. Repeat with each batch. Reserve the meat.
Cook the bacon pieces, stirring constantly because by now the bottom of your pot should look brown to you!!
Add the onions and carrots. Pour a little bit of wine, don't be afraid if it bubbles and déglace the pot with a wooden spatula/spoon (scratching the bottom of the pot: all the brown pieces should come out).
Add the meat, the bouquet garni, pepper and mushrooms.
Barely cover with red wine (ie, there should be just enough wine to cover the meat/veggies: you don't want them to swim in wine).
Add one tablespoon of Dijon Mustard and stir.
Cover and cook over low heat for at least 1.5 hours. 2-3 hours is best, stirring occasionally to make sure that nothing sticks to the bottom
Add fresh chopped parsley
Serve over steamed potatoes or pasta.

Not a Bad Weekend After All

Had to postpone a photo shoot on Saturday due to that good ole West Texas wind, but the weekend wasn't a complete wash - got to head here for supper last night. Why is there a bathtub there??

Found this cool photo display idea from (where else?) www.coolphotoideas.com. Wouldn't this be pretty in an entryway? This picture shows Christmas cards I think, which would also be cool. Someone remind me of this in about 11 months!

Shuttercal or "A Photo a Day"

That is a link to my Shuttercal page. (shutter for camera, cal for calendar). It's a website that allows you to store a photo each day in a calendar format. Mine looks like this:

I started on January first and I'm going to try to take a picture every day in 2010. Shuttercal also has a cool product. They will print out each of your pictures with the date and the caption on the back. You can order them at the end of each month. Tthey also make a box with a custom insert that will hold the photos.

I don't know about you, but I find myself printing fewer and fewer pictures now that I shoot with a digital camera. It just doesn't seem necessary. Doing this will at least give us some pictures we can hold in our hands :)

There's something about this idea that I just love - having a picture from every single day of the year all in one box. The days fly by so quickly, and I think it will be cool to have this to remember each day, whether it was a big important day or a just an ordinary one.

You don't have to wait until January to begin - you can start at the first of any month. You do have to order the prints by the whole month. So start February first, or maybe the first day of spring, or maybe on your birthday, and you can have a box full of memories. Also, you don't HAVE to order them at all! You can use Shuttercal strictly to store your photos. It's free, by the way. I love free!

Even if you don't try Shuttercal, consider taking a picture every day. It will make you a better photographer, and it will make you step outside your box. It will also help you remember all the ordinary days in your life that sometimes fly by all too quickly.

Displaying Photos

Clients often tell me "I love all the photos, but I don't know what to do with them." Here are some out-of-the-ordinary ideas from my home:

This is the hallway by our bedrooms. These are photo ledges that I got from Lowe's several years ago. I love walking down this hallway and remembering when my kids were little, the adorable braces years, and all the way up to right now.

Note that a lot of them are framed, but some aren't. (in the picture below, see the largest photo, and the black and white to the right of it) Recently, I've been having them put on a board and then displaying them without a frame. I love this look!

Here's a recent addition. I bought the words from Uppercase Living (you can email jill law at jayjilllaw@yahoo.com for Uppercase Living info). I applied them to the wall by rubbing them on with a credit card-like applicator. I love the sentiment and was very pleased with how this turned out:

One more - this is Janna's room. It's a display of 9 framed 12x12 prints. She asked for this for her birthday one year (she loves photos as much as I do!). It really makes her room shine (even when it's messy, which it usually is...) We ordered new pictures for some of the frames recently (many that Janna took herself - Go Janna!), so I'll post an update when we hang them them up.

We visited my daughter, Jessie, in Lubbock earlier this month. The kids wore bright colors and/or bright accessories and we headed to the Tech campus for a fun shoot. Just wanted to show you that you don't have to have a green park setting to make great shots - in winter, add color and interest with your clothing choices!! I am going to scout out ASU this afternoon for some good spots - I'm sure there are some around the campus. If you want to try something like this, just call to book a session (you can use our scarves and mittens if you'd like :) )
